Conclusion

Australia’s annual intake of asylum seekers is very minimal, ranking seventh of the countries receiving asylum seekers and accounting only for about 4% of the share of total applications. There is no doubt that some aspects of Australia’s asylum seeker policies are in violation of international human rights laws and conventions. There is an opportunity for Australia to take international leadership in providing evidence-based community practices to effectively deal with the various needs of asylum seekers. Yet, despite numerous calls to action, both major political parties continue to take a tough stance on the policies affecting asylum seekers. This only exacerbates the trauma suffered by people seeking protection from persecution, resulting in poorer physical and mental health outcomes.
